Garden help

Need Help With a Plant Problem?

These free or low-cost services can look at your actual plant, or answer safety questions on the spot.

We do not diagnose plants by email or photo. Many problems look alike, and the answer depends on local pests, weather, and soil. Local experts can see what we cannot.

  • County extension office

Extension staff and Master Gardener volunteers answer home garden questions and can identify insects, diseases, and plant problems.

  • Plant diagnostic lab

Many land-grant universities run a lab that identifies plant problems from a sample, often for a small fee. Ask your extension office how to send one.

  • Pesticide questions

    800-858-7378

The National Pesticide Information Center has trained specialists who answer pesticide questions free of charge, Monday through Friday.

  • Poison emergencies

    1-800-222-1222

Poison Help is free, confidential, and open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If someone has collapsed or is not breathing, call 911.

  • Before you dig

    811

Call 811 before you dig deep for posts or beds, so buried utility lines get marked. Notice times vary by state.

  • Canning and preserving

The National Center for Home Food Preservation publishes tested recipes and methods for canning, freezing, and drying your harvest.

Questions

Contact FAQs

Can you tell what is wrong with my plant from a photo?

No. Many plant problems look alike, so we do not diagnose by photo. Your county extension office or a state plant diagnostic lab can identify it, often free or for a small fee.

Do you accept guest posts?

No. Every guide is written and checked by our Editorial Team from extension and USDA sources. We also do not sell links or sponsored posts.

Can I suggest a topic for a guide?

Yes, please do. Email editor@avegetablegarden.com with your question, your garden size, and your region. Reader questions shape what we write next.

How fast will I hear back?

We usually reply within three business days. Corrections can take a little longer, because we check them against the original source first.
